Soil frost affects stem diameter growth of Norway spruce with delay

چکیده

Abstract Key message A lack of snow cover and increased soil freezing may not only have short-term impacts on trees but longer-lasting lagged effects radial growth. Soil temperature frost intensity are affected by the depth insulating timing snowmelt which predicted to change climate warming. This increase tree growth if there is less or decrease no cover, temperatures still exist. Previously, we showed that changes in manipulations a ~ 50-year-old stand Norway spruce [ Picea abies (L.) Karst.] eastern Finland two winters (2005/2006 2006/2007) led physiology, morphology, shoots roots. The treatments were: (1) control with natural accumulation melting; (2) removal during winter; (3) winter insulation at top forest floor late delay thawing. In this study, examined those trunk increment cores nine-year recovery period after termination treatments. Annual ring width index (AWI) was calculated for each year normalization respective proportion last (2005) before No differences AWI were found between manipulation period. However, started appear 1 finished, became significant 4 years later 2011 lasted 3 years. lower treatment removed than thawing, latter results indicate consequences trees. positive prolonged growing season increasing summer boreal region therefore be fully realised due negative decreased freezing.

Prolonged Soil Frost Affects Hydraulics and Phenology of Apple Trees

Restoration of an adequate water supply in spring is a prerequisite for survival of angiosperm trees in temperate regions. Trees must re-establish access to soil water and recover xylem functionality. We thus hypothesized that prolonged soil frost impairs recovery and affects hydraulics and phenology of Malus domestica var. 'Golden Delicious.' To test this hypothesis, over two consecutive winte...

Cytokinins in Norway Spruce Seedlings and Forest Soil Pollution

KRAIGHER H. & HANKE D.E. 1996. Cytokinins in Norway spruce seedlings and forest soil pollution. Phyton (Horn, Ausrtia) 36 (3): (57) (60). Cytokinins can correlate with pollution damage in spruce trees and also with different strains and species of their mycorrhizal symbionts. In our study, Norway spruce seedlings were grown in vitro on sterilized or nonsterile soil substrates from two different...

Fresh-stem bending of silver fir and Norway spruce.

The bending and growth characteristics of large fresh stems from four silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and three Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees were studied. Twenty logs taken from different stem heights were subjected to four-point bending tests. From the bending test records, we calculated stress-strain curves, which accounted for detailed log taper, shear deformation and self wei...

Fresh-wood bending: linking the mechanical and growth properties of a Norway spruce stem.

To provide data and methods for analyzing stem mechanics, we investigated bending, density and growth characteristics of 207 specimens of fresh wood from different heights and radial positions of the stem of one mature Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) tree. From the shape of each stress-strain curve, which was calculated from bending tests that accounted for shear deformation, we determine...

Doctor's dissertation. ISSN 1401-6230, ISBN 91-576-6304-1. Global warming is predicted to affect the carbon balance of forests. A change in the carbon balance would give a positive or negative feedback to the greenh...
